Music

Anyone who has heard the voices of sisters, Vasanti Rao and Jayanti Rao, knows the richness of this duo and the spiritual experiences their voices bring. Both exude charm and joy through their personalities and their voices, and their chants and songs have been an integral part in their yogic development.

We present here selections of Vasanti’s music. The “Guru Stotram” was recorded in the Ashram around 1960 in the dead of the night to reduce noise pollution. Other Ashram recordings follow. Listed next are two sets of Sanskrit invocations. They were recorded in 1979 at the Wainwright House in Rye, New York, during a daylong seminar presented by M.P. Pandit (vide M.P. Pandit on this website under the section “Talks”). Other pieces by Vasanti were recorded in Pensacola, Florida, in 1981.

Jayanti has released two CDs – “Sri Aurobindo: The Supramental Avatar” and “The Divine Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.” Both albums feature Jayanti’s tunings of Pujalal’s Sanskrit hymns, recorded by her sweet-souled and brilliant husband, Premanand Rao, and directed by her sublime sister, Vasanti. Jayanti’s singing is now drawing commendation from an appreciative and global audience. We are delighted to present selections from those here.

Vasanti Rao

Vasanti is unique. She recognized Sri Aurobindo as her guru and became an Ashramite at the age of seventeen, reaching there on the 15th of August, 1947, just as India won her Independence and just when spiritual India celebrated the 75th birthday of Sri Aurobindo.

Vasanti began her service to the Mother in the Library and some years later joined the team working with M.P. Pandit. While her literary, linguistic, and cultural skills are abundant, Vasanti is esteemed for the purity and beauty of her singing voice. We have heard the moved members of those audiences report that her voice threw them directly into a spiritual experience or a deep state of peace and receptivity.

Jayanti Rao

Jayanti Rao was from her earliest years an intellectual dynamo and a musical prodigy. As with her sister, Jayanti was drawn to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram decades ago to practice sadhana. Jayanti has continued to develop the range, technical skill, and power of her glorious voice as a means of yogic development. Her clear soprano can be heard on the two beautiful CDs mentioned above. These feature Jayanti’s tunings of Pujalal’s Sanskrit hymns, recorded by her sweet-souled and brilliant husband, Premanand Rao, and directed by her sublime sister, Vasanti.
